ABOUT

BIOGRAPHY

Kim Powell is an American multidisciplinary artist who creates work based on intuitive abstraction, rich in color and bursting with movement and depth. She earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and continued her studies in painting at Bellas Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. In 2010, she studied painting with American painter John Alexander via the Corcoran School of the Arts & Design.

Powell majored in Illustration, is a graphic designer, songwriter, drummer, and producer, and has performed in numerous theater productions and indie bands in the U.S. and Mexico, where she lived for 18 years. In 2017, she was part of the Eros group painting exhibition, curated by Andrew Fisher of the Fisher-Wiseman Collection. There, she examined sensuality and the abstraction of the human body. A solo exhibition soon followed, exploring questions surrounding cultural identity and how countries have unique visual languages. Powell's current work explores channels of awareness, and as interconnected beings, she invites viewers to visit a realm beyond the physical but in a space-between.

Powell exhibits regularly, most recently participating in a group exhibition at the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin, Texas. Powell works with creative directors and art consultants, providing unique work for special projects. Her work is collected internationally.

Artis Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT

We move through life, thinking, feeling, perceiving, acting, and reacting. All these activities carry vibrational patterns that form reality as we know it. Biologist Rupert Sheldrake theorizes that morphic fields are what organize information throughout life. These fields enable us to "regenerate and heal after damage, coordinate vibratory activities of the nervous system, and are closely connected to mental activity." Much like morphic fields, there is a force at play when I paint, an underlying guidance I trust. The act of painting is a healing ritual where heightened awareness takes place.

When I begin a painting, I align my energy to the present moment. I allow intuition to guide me to colors, brushes, and tools. I trust what comes and intend to stay loose and free while making deliberate marks and movements. Contemplations that were once internal become externalized as shapes, textures, and colors. As a painting unfolds and begins to take shape, structures arise. Layer upon layer, I obscure, reveal, and obscure again, and a puzzle to solve emerges. The final result is a completed painting, which acts as an expression of the unconscious.

Making abstract art, with its inherent ambiguity, is a dream-like process. It serves as therapeutic, temporary relief from more rigid waking hours. Yet still, it mimics life, which flows between chaos and order, surrender and intention. I aim for the work to energize and awaken reflection on the subtler realms. Instead of art serving as an object, it becomes a conduit. When the viewer finds a connection, they become the subject of the work, which points to our true oneness.
